Expat Mental Health Support Group

A Space for Internationals to Talk, Reflect, and Connect

It has been almost a year since I began working in preventive mental health.

Over time, I have been noticing something that often remains in the background. Many internationals and migrant residents are navigating life transitions quietly. They are adjusting to a new culture, managing relationships across different contexts, and rebuilding daily routines, often without a familiar support system.

On the surface, many are functioning well. At the same time, there can be a level of emotional strain that does not reach formal support services, yet still affects everyday life.

This is where preventive, community-based spaces may have a role.

I am currently launching a small pilot initiative called Expat Mental Health, offered at no cost. It is a community support group designed for internationals in the Groningen and Oldambt area. The group will consist of 8 to 10 participants and will meet for four sessions. Each session will focus on reflection, shared experiences, and building supportive connections in a respectful and non-clinical setting.

The initiative is facilitated through my practice, Astramía Counselling. The intention is to explore how this kind of model could contribute to broader preventive wellbeing efforts within municipalities.

This work is shaped both by my professional experience and my own journey as an immigrant. It has helped me understand how certain challenges are not always visible, yet can still have a meaningful impact.
